Sharon High Class of 1965 Reunites After 50 Years

Almost 70 members of the Sharon High School Class of 1965 reunited on the weekend of October 9-11, 2015, in honor of their 50th year since their graduation. It was the largest gathering of those classmates since they walked across the stage of Sharon High on the evening of June 17, 1965. While some had kept in touch with each other sporadically over the years, many had seen each other only at a few reunions. Some had not seen each other in 50 years. There was so much catching up to do.

The weekend began Friday evening at Alice's Mandaran Taste Restaurant on Pond Street in Sharon. Along with classmates, spouses, and significant others, the class was joined by several former teachers including Roger Chappuis, Dudley Davenport, Philippe de Lacoste, Helen Sanford McGarry, Basil Cronin and Joel Peckham. A buffet of hot hors d'oeuvres, along with liquid refreshment was consumed as friends chatted about... well, whatever friends talk about when they haven't seen each other in years. Several classmates made a point to reminisce with faculty, often thanking them for the fine education that they provided.

On Saturday morning, a few hardy souls from the class hiked the trails of Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary. Crawling through an opening in the fence surrounding the fire tower, these "scofflaws" climbed the tower for a breathtaking view of the surrounding area, including some of the taller buildings of Boston. We may not be teenagers anymore, but the spirit of adventure remains!

On Saturday afternoon, many of us gathered in the auditorium of Sharon High School as current School Superintendent Tim Farmer welcomed us back and presented us with "Golden Diplomas" to commemorate our 50 years since graduation. He then provided a tour of the high school. Through remodeling and expansion, the school had changed a lot, but many familiar sights brought back a flood of memories from when we walked those halls on a daily basis so many years ago. The main event took place on Saturday evening at Demetri's Function Room on Route 1 in Foxboro. An elegant facility welcomed us with hors d'oeuvres and a fine meal. Rev. Stephen Washburn provided the invocation. Our classmates who served in the military were recognized and thanked for their service. "First timers" at a class reunion were also acknowledged. A solemn remembrance ceremony was held as the names of the deceased members of our class were read. The tone became more upbeat as six of our cheerleaders led us in one of their traditional cheers. An evening of dancing and wonderful fellowship rounded out the program.

All good things must come to an end. But, not before one final get together for brunch on Sunday morning. Returning to Demetri's, a couple dozen classmates enjoyed their late morning meal as they reminisced and pledged to stay in touch in the future.

The 50th year reunion of the Sharon High School Class of 1965 has come to an end. But, the friendships and memories will continue on.
